Ranging from beauty & health to bedding, clothing, furniture as well as appliances and food, there is almost nothing you can’t find.
The slogan, “Expect More, Pay Less” made us wonder how well does Targe price match and do their post-sale price adjustments stack up against the competition.
If you’d like to know what our team has found out, stay tuned and keep reading. This article will walk you through the price matching process for traditional and online stores as well as exceptions and exclusions to take care of. Target Price Match Policy
Target’s price match policy allows you to claim your discount either directly at the time of checkout or for up to 14 days after you’ve bought an item. This, of course, requires that you have an identical item available at a qualified competitor.
Target is a pacesetter in saving shoppers money with its policy of price matching & post-sales price adjustments. Not only do they price match other brick-and-mortar stores but also (some) online competitors. It’s also worth mentioning that Target, that compared to other retail stores, price matches all year long (with the minor exception of the thanks-giving week).
Before heading out and claiming your price match, review this brief list to know whether you have a chance or not.
- Qualified Competitor – Not every online retailer is price matched. Have a look at the list further down to find out which ones are.
- Cross-Store – Price differences between two brick-and-mortar stores will not be matched.
- Store Type – Target stores will match Target.com prices (and vice-versa).
- Availability – The item you want to match with must be readily available at both stores.
- Quantity – Price matching is generally limited to one item per price match and per customer.
Process Of Price Matching
A price match usually takes place for a particular product when you discover an identical product at a lower price somewhere else. The difference between those two prices is what you get in case your price match succeeds.
For Target, price matching is about “feeling a sense of satisfaction that you’ve paid the right price” Should you ever pay too much, you can rest assured that Target will come up with the difference. Keeping a loyal customer happy is more important than making a few extra bucks.
In order to get your price match request started, simply find a sales representative and show them your proof. He/She will then adjust the price to the lower level.
Keep in mind that price differences between traditional (non-online) Target stores will not be price matched.

Exceptions
As with every price match policy, there are also some exceptions. We’ve put together a list of conditions that will exclude your items from being price matched and/or price adjusted. Make sure to check if your item falls in any of the categories mentioned below beforehand.
- Store Closure & Used Items – Clearance, closeout, liquidation as well as damaged, used, refurbished, and other non-brand-new items.
- Membership Sites – Retailers that require a membership (Sam’s Club or Costco) or login before displaying prices.
- Coupons & Gift Cards – Coupon offers, loyalty cards, promo codes, credit cards…
- Typographical Error – Pricing errors due to typographical mistakes.
- Marketplaces – Third-party fulfillment on competitors’ websites.
- Alcohol – Alcoholic items are not price matched for online-only retailers (eg. Amazon)
- Services – Product services such as warranty, assembly, or any other service.
- Location – Stores located in Hawai or Alaska will not price match online competitors.

Target Price Adjustment
Target do provide price adjustment, meaning if you find a lower price within a period of 14 days post purchasing, bring in proof and Target will adjust the price to the lower amount.
If you find a current lower price within 14 days after purchase, just bring in the proof and we will adjust your payment to the lower price, upon request. Target store price matches and adjustments are completed at the store on any lane. For Target.com purchases, call Target.com Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869.
While price matching can give you pretty good savings on the spot, we mostly don’t know the prices of competing stores at that very moment. Being able to get a partial refund days after the purchase is even better. It allows comparing prices at home and without being in a rush.
If you buy from Target, you have 14 days to claim a partial refund. Follow these simple steps
- Bring proof of the lower price (printed ad, website, email ad,…)
- Receipts – Original receipts are required if you want to price adjust afterward.
Target reserves the right to verify any claim and decline if the price can’t be verified.
